Neurosonography is a specialized ultrasound technique that records the diagnostic images of a patient’s brain and nervous system. Ultrasound technology is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce an echo that can be translated into an image that can be seen by the naked eye. The images are then used to diagnose and treat different ailments within the body. In the case of neurosonography an image of the brain and nervous system is produced.

Ultrasound technology does not have any radiation or other harmful elements and it is best used on the soft structures within the body. This makes it an excellent tool for looking at the brain for the diagnosis of different problems, such as tumors or more. Ultrasound technicians are trained to use the special sonography equipment and neurosonographers have received additional specialized training to image the brain and the nervous system.

Medical Sonographer

The sonographer or Ultrasound technician uses specialized equipment with high-frequency sound waves to capture the images of the patient’s internal organs. They are then responsible for recording the images. The images may be in a video or still format and once the images have been recorded they are forwarded to a radiology physician for review and diagnosis of the patient’s condition.

A specialist will work specifically on the nervous system, including the brain and other parts of the central nervous system throughout the body. There is also the specialty within the specialty of neonatal neurosonography, which involves studying and diagnosing neurological and nervous system disorders in infants. Most often this is with infants who have been born prematurely. With these tiny little babies, the neurosonographer needs to have an especially steady and gentle hand.

Neurosonographers use specialized beam shapes and frequencies that are completely different from the ones used for obstetric or abdominal sonographers as the brain and nervous system are completely and very different structures. Hence the reason for the advanced education and knowledge that is required for a neurosonographer.

Become A Neurosonographer

In order to become a neurosonographer you will need to take the typical courses required for an ultrasound technician along with the specialized classes for the specific field of neurosonography. Typically it is a 2 year course, however, there are 4 year courses available too. After you have finished the course, you will need to pass a certification exam.

A neurosonographer will typically be able to find work in hospitals, clinics and a few doctor’s offices. The typical day will require the neurosonographer to be on their feet for long hours and they will often be working in darker rooms where the equipment is located. Neurosonographers may also have some of the job related stress that comes from having patients who are chronically ill. However, the work can also be very fascinating as our brains and nervous systems are so complex.

The extended job outlook for neurosonographers is very good. There are always advancements in technology and the aging of the population is increasing the demand for diagnostic careers throughout the medical industry.
