DMI Industries

First & Last Name: Dennis Kensok

Position/Title: Quality Control Supervisor

A brief description of your job responsibilities: Responsible for in-process and final inspection/test functions. Ultrasound, Mag Particle, Visual Weld, Laser, Blast, Paint, Assembly.

Business name: DMI Industries

Business location(s): West Fargo, ND and Stevensville, Ontario

DMI IndustriesThe year your business was established: DMI’s roots date back to 1978, when Dakota Machine and Tool opened its doors in West Fargo, N.D. Back then, the company focused on machine tools and refurbishing machining equipment for resale.

A void in the custom fabrication market in the mid-1980s opened the doors for diversification and expansion. Dakota Machine and Tool manufactured its first sugar beet piler in 1987, and we haven’t looked back. We transformed our shop for custom manufacturing to deliver processing equipment as diverse as ASME pressure vessels to conveying systems.

Expansion in the sugar industry in the late 1990s provided new opportunities, and the company began to design and sell sugar tower diffusers. At the same time, the wind energy industry began to explode in North America. Our evolving core competency as a heavy fabricated vessel manufacturer combined with the flexibility to customize our shop made us a natural for building wind towers.

We’ve been manufacturing high-quality wind towers since 1999, and have delivered them to destinations from The Yukon to Texas, New York to California. Meanwhile, we’ve continued to diversify and expand our plant capacities. In 2001, to better reflect our capabilities and dedication to anticipating and meeting needs in heavy manufacturing, we changed our name to DMI industries.

Today, we are focused on combining profitability and stewardship in the renewable energy sector. Renewable energy provides substantial long-term growth opportunities for DMI, allows us to engage in projects that add to local, regional, national and international economies and productivity, and helps us to ensure a cleaner and safer environment for our children and grandchildren.

Your motto or slogan: Discover Manufacturing Innovation

Company website: www.dmiindustries.com

Describe the products and/or services you offer: Heavy fabrication of large components for the renewable energy markets

Type of Training Activity Completed: Blueprint Reading

Number of people trained: 10

What was your company's motivation (or need) in seeking this training? We discovered that while our inspectors were very good with weld inspection, we had some weakness in the area of dimensional inspection capabilities for smaller fabricated components.

Describe your goals in improving business through taking this training: We purchased a Faro Arm inspection system in 2005 to improve the quality of smaller fabricated components supplied to our internal customers. The training offered by the Skills and Technology Training Center allows us more flexibility to utilize resources more efficiently.

Describe your overall experience in working with the Skills & Technology Training Center as a training solution provider: The level of service and the commitment to quality training by the staff at the Skills and Technology Training Center is second to none. The experience level of the instructor allowed us to very quickly and easily customize a training package that fit our needs. The classes were set up and ready to go with just a phone call and a meeting. It does not get any easier than that.
